The 2026 NFL draft is around the corner, and the San Francisco 49ers are one of the 32 teams in the league looking to make some good picks during the event.
The draft, which is entering its 91st year, will take place from April 23 through 25 in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania.
So, what’s the most important position for the 49ers to fill in the draft? In a Tuesday, March 24, feature for ESPN, NFL analyst and analystField Yates gives his projections for which players will be selected first.
“We still have a long road ahead, with pro days just starting up around the country,” he states in the piece. “But for now, it’s safe to make some predictions for the first two rounds based on team needs, my personal rankings and what I’m hearing from people around the league.”
Yates sees the 49ers getting a Nick Bosa complement in the draft with their No. 27 pick in Keldric Faulk out of Auburn.
“The Niners need to work on their edge group, though a majorboost will come from the returns of Nick Bosa and Mykel Williams from injury,” he notes in the piece. “Faulk is an intriguing prospect whose tape was better in 2024 than 2025 (7.0 sacks compared with 2.0, respectively).”

He continues, “But his skill set is too good to ignore: He’s 6-6, 276 pounds with positional versatility and stout run defense. A defensive line coach will see the potential to develop Faulk into a much more consistent rusher, as he won’t turn 21 years old until September.”

Faulk’s NFL draft profile says he has a “long, developing frame, good movement skills and the potential for odd or even fronts once he gains more muscle mass.”

The profile also implies Faulk has a bright future in the NFL, stating, “He’s a culture player with high character who earns a grade bump based on his age (turns 21 in September), traits and advanced foundation.”
Finally, it notes that, “Faulk needs polish but offers a high ceiling that should reveal itself within a couple of years.”
