Alexander Zverev started this tournament losing a set, winning a match and contemplating an offer of marriage.

Zverev dropped the first set against Canadian Gabriel Diallo, which even for the third seed was not totally surprising given the quality of the tall, big-serving Diallo.

Still, he went to his chair after the set, sat down and thought, “Well it can only get better from here”.

“I was thinking it can’t get any worse than that,” Zverev said.

It didn’t. It quickly got quite a lot better. Zverev’s first serves became unbreakable and Diallo’s dropped away.

He knew what he had to improve and to change in his game.

Zverev admitted on court afterwards that it was obvious what he needed to do – he didn’t need 50 coaches to tell him.

“Or 80 million Germans,” the German statedwryly.

He made changes and tidied up the match in four sets, 6-7, 6-1, 6-4, 6-2.

If trivia and slightly meaningless stats are your thing, he became the only man to make it through to the second round in each of the last 10 Australian Opens. I know, huh.

As a further curious aside, in his on-court interview with Andrea Petkovic after the match, Zverev was distracted by fans calling out with a proposal of marriage from one or two romantic chaps holding up minorhandwritten cardboard signs.

He smiled and said, “Where is the ring man?”

Zverev declined, but they were persistent.

“I statedno, stop with the honeymoon stuff,” he laughed.
