The Pittsburgh Steelers enter the 2026 NFL offseason facing a big-time Aaron Rodgers question. Will the future Hall of Fame quarterback return for one more season or choose to leave the franchise?

After playing the 2025 season on a one-year contract signed last offseason, Rodgers is a free agent once again. He could choose to retire, he might opt to sign with another team, or he could return for the 2026 season with the Steelers.

Pittsburgh went through a coaching change this offseason. Mike Tomlin chose to step down following the 2025 season, which led the Steelers to hire Mike McCarthy. Of course, Rodgers and McCarthy have a very successful track record with each other.

McCarthy and Rodgers teamed up on the Green Bay Packers previously. Both hold high levels of respect for each other. Rodgers has been open about his interest in playing for McCarthy again and the head coach has been vocal about wanting the 41-year-old quarterback to return for another season.

Pittsburgh Steelers QB Aaron Rodgers

With that being said, Pittsburgh has been linked to a majorpotential move this offseason that could help lure Rodgers back for the 2026 season.

USA Today’s Jacob Camenker has named the Steelers among the group of teams who could pursue veteran running back Aaron Jones following his release from the Minnesota Vikings.

“Jones would fit the bill, having averaged just under 43 receptions per season since 2018,” Camenker wrote.

“Add in his history playing with Aaron Rodgers and Mike McCarthy during their time with the Green Bay Packers and a deal with Pittsburgh could make a lot of sense.”

Jones is coming off of a 2025 season with the Vikings that saw him play in 12 games. He carried the football 132 times for 548 yards and two scores, averaging 4.2 yards per carry. Jones also caught 28 passes for 199 yards and another score.

Depending on the price tag, Pittsburgh would make a lot of sense for Jones. He would provide additional help on the ground, but his dual-threat ability would be a major plus for the Steelers as well.

Rodgers and Jones have a good friendship from their days together with the Packers. If the Steelers were to sign Jones, it would add another layer of intrigue for the star quarterback to return to Pittsburgh for another year.
