The North Carolina Tar Heels surprised many when they hired former NBA head coach Michael Malone to succeed recently fired Hubert Davis.
It’s not that Malone is a bad coach by any means.
He got several years of NBA experience as an assistant with the New York Knicks, Cleveland Cavaliers, New Orleans Hornets, Golden State Warriors before earning head-coaching jobs with the Sacramento Kings and Denver Nuggets.
Malone compiled a 471-327 record with the Nuggets, which included six playoff appearances and one NBA championship. But he was fired after a 47-32 finish during the 2024-25 season, and he took a year off before getting back into coaching.

While many Tar Heels fans were hoping for Dusty May, Tommy Lloyd, or Billy Donovan, settling for Malone felt like a letdown for some.
North Carolina tried to dissuade those fan concerns with a graphic posted on Saturday with the caption “player development” featuring all of the NBA players Malone “helped develop.”
The graphic included Los Angeles Lakers star LeBron James, Warriors guard Steph Curry, and Nuggets star Nikola Jokic, among others — to which fans immediately began roasting the school in the comment section or trying to credit James and Curry’s career accomplishments to Malone.
“Are we insinuating Michael Malone developed Lebron and Steph? I just spit out my Peroni all over the dinner table. Thanks for the laugh,” one fan wrote.
“Who knows where LeBron, Jokic, and Steph would be if it weren’t for Mike Malone,” another fan stated.
“Ain’t no way you’re trying to take credit for developing LeBron [expletive] James 😭😭😭😭😭😭😭,” a third fan scoffed.
“This has to be the most ridiculous graphic of all time,” one user replied.
“So basically Mike Malone has developed everyone NBA all-star of the past 25 years. Impressive stuff for being the 9th option for North Carolina,” another user remarked.
“UNC my team but this post is [expletive] dumb. 😂 That man ain’t develop Bron, CP3, Steph….🤦🏾♂️🤦🏾♂️. False advertising lol,” one fan quipped.
“I am a UNC fan, this post is [expletive] hilarious. I refuse to believe it’s real 🤡🤡🤡,” another fan exclaimed.
